In post-communist Romania, there is a direct connection between the proliferation of multifaceted alternative spirituality and the massive economic and social changes that led to the establishment of the capitalist economy, the flourishing of consumerism and the implementation of neo-liberalism. The combined effects of these developments are well highlighted in the case of the alternative spirituality centered on healing where an interesting process of instrumentalization of work and money can be noticed. The rhetoric of this spirituality involves the construction of a new ethic of labour, as an opportunity to work on oneself but also on social issues, while financial gain is viewed in a spiritual key.
