290.3 - GIANNI VATTIMO AND THE 'VOIR VENIR' OF RELIGION

Text:
The paper considers Gianni Vattimo's theoretical approach to the 'voir venir' of religion, answering the question What is the future of religion after metaphysics? It will be shown that one aspect is often overlooked when considering Vattimo's philosophy: all Vattimo's texts say that he is not talking about the future, but about the coming. What is not highlighted, then, is Vattimo's very notion of time, which is largely influenced by Nietzsche, and whose most striking moment would be to speak not of the 'future' of religion, but of the 'coming', or of the 'future as coming' - the 'voir venir'. The paper relates Vattimo's conception of time to his interpretation of Nietzsche's conception of time and juxtaposes it with the conceptions of the future as the time of coming thought by contemporary authors such as Emmanuel Levinas, Catherine Malabou and Giorgio Agamben.
