Rather recently research has started, how Buddhism is influencing modern and late-modern art and cultural work and this vice verse shapes the latter spiritually as well.
This paper will concentrate exemplarily upon music and show, how a Buddhist background of musicians and composers and how a more general dealing with Buddhist practices and philosophy shape the aesthetic concepts of space and time for example in minimal music and in the compositions and concepts from Steve Reich and street musician Moondog up to Philipp Glass, not the least his ballets, or the film music for Koyaanisqatsi. Some European musicians will be introduced as well such as Christopher Fox, Claus Bantzer and György Ligeti.
Forerunners will be identified (Erik Satie, John Cage and Carl Orff) and elements of minimal music will be found in electronic music by Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk to name just a few examples.
