Text:
New York, April 10, 1955: Pierre Teilhard de Chardin died seventy years ago... In the days following this event, the press quoted Teilhard de Chardin constantly. Some articles simply announced his death, others retraced his career, and many mentioned a work that seemed to fulfil an expectation. Beside the memory of his writings grows the memory of a man with an exceptional ascendancy. "To be heard in full voice, the Lord has deemed that it was necessary first that this great servant come to join him", said his friend Mgr Bruno de Solages . Paradoxically, his absence makes him more present than ever. How does Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's disappearance open the door to many interpretations of his work? Are we facing the birth of an "ism" made around his name: Teilhardism? The numerous articles that mention Teilhard's death in the newspapers offers the possibility of reading, at first, about the circumstances surrounding his death, which, far from commonplace, are at the beginning of an exceptional posthumous life - Teilhard disappears in the distance, suddenly, on Easter Sunday. The press allows, in a second step, to grasp the themes related with the priest - his fidelity and his efforts to obey. Finally, as time goes by, the disciples pick up the flame and pay tribute to him - a fact that arouses criticism and contradiction. Was Teilhard's death necessary for his work to live? Last september 2023, I published, in France, a new biography devoted to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. In 2024, the Vatican asked for an italian translation and they invited me, in 2025, to present the book - Roma, Milano, Padua, Brescia... - around this anniversary. The April 10 is always an important day. Are we living a "moment" of acceptance of Teilhard de Chardin ? My presentation will be focused in the past, historical presentation, which should help us understand the actual reception, a really new one, of Teilhard de Chardin by his Church.
