Synopsis: Salem, a young man from Western Sahara who studied in Ukraine, now lives in a Dutch refugee centre housed in a former office building. At this meeting point between worlds, he waits for a decision that will determine his future. Barzakh is an intimate essay film that explores the inner world of an ambitious student in a moment of in-betweenness. What role do a person's dreams and desires play in a place where action is no longer possible, and where time no longer seems to exist? Through Salem's limbo, Barzakh asks what Europe's migration crisis might reveal, once we start looking at it through the eyes of a thinker from a different age: an ancient philosopher born in the very city Salem dreams of.
