This special session focuses on how SCM scholars can influence the discourse on supply chain emissions. These emissions are defined as "the total greenhouse gas emissions generated by the entire network of interconnected and interdependent actors involved in all value-related activities—from upstream to downstream" (Wieland & Creutzig, 2025). Supply chain emissions, particularly upstream Scope 3 emissions, typically far exceed direct company emissions. Research on emissions at the supply chain level and on creating new visions for a post-fossil society remains limited in SCM. In line with recent calls to accelerate academic engagement in this discourse, this symposium, led by Leticia Canal Vieira, Maria Cristina De Stefano, and Andreas Wieland, will provide an overview of the ongoing discourse on supply chain emissions and invite participants to engage in an academic dialogue. Participants will discuss research opportunities and their potential societal impact.
