In almost every western country the preservation and the transformation of Church buildings and religious heritage become a major challenge. It involves a lot of interrelated issues: legal, historical, architectural, social and religious. It raises complex questions concerning property, social duties toward cultural heritage, feasibility of conservation or transformation, and so on. Indeed, in North America, in Europe and also in North Africa, we can notice a growing number of articles dealing with different aspects of it. There are also, here and there, seminars or workshops on the subject. Moreover, we can observe in many countries major project of transformation of religious building for new societal goals. There is a need for a more systematize collaboration. The goal of the panel is to have an international and an interdisciplinary view of what is at stake in transformation or preservation of church buildings and religious heritage.
