Roberto Chiesa is Full Professorand at Vita-Salute University, Chief of Vascular Surgery Unit, San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, Italy.
He is author or coauthor of more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, related to many areas of vascular specialty.
He is associate editor of Annals of Vascular Surgery, International Journal of Cardiology, and The Italian Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and member of the editorial board of The Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery.
From 1983 to 1986 he attended, as "Assistant Etranger", the Claude Bernard University in Lyon (Hopital Edouard-Herriot, France), headed by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard, carrying out specialization and research activities regarding abdominal and peripheral vascular surgery and kidney and pancreas transplants. From 1986 to 1987 he attended the Thoracic and Cardiac Surgical Unit headed by Professor Magi Yacoub (Harefield Hospital-Harefield, Middlesex, United Kingdom) to increase experience in surgery of the thoracic-abdominal aorta and in cardiac surgery (heart transplants). Since 1995 he has regularly attended the Baylor College of Medicine/ The Methodist Hospital - Houston, Texas headed by Professor Joseph S. Coselli to increase experience in the surgery of aneurysms of the thoracic and thoracic-abdominal aorta.
In 2014 he served as President of SCVE (Société de Chirurgie Vasculaire ed Endovasculaire de Langue Française), and in 2015 as President of SICVE (Italian Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery).
He is the President of the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at San Raffaele Scientific Institute and "Vita-Salute" University, Director of the Vascular Surgery Residency Program, and Member of the Italian National Board for Academic Certification in Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery.
With a surgical experience of more than 30,000 major vascular arterial interventions, his main interest is aortic surgery and he is recognized by the international scientific community as a world leading expert on thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm and dissection surgical repair, having performed more than 1100 thoraco-abdominal aortic repairs. He also recently reported the largest series ever published of hybrid treatment of aortic arch disease presenting more than 250 cases.
Every two years in December, he organizes in Milan one of the most important international meetings focused on aortic and peripheral vascular surgery, the "How To Do It" congress, now at its 8th edition, hosting more than 1000 delegates.
