Text:
This presentation examines the mobilization against the presence and erection of crosses on Italian mountain peaks, a contentious issue in the debate over religious symbols in public spaces. Rooted in legal debates, reaching the European Court of Human Rights, the discussion is as controversial as it is divisive, involving diverse stakeholders both nationally and internationally. The core of the sociological issue lies in the universal value assigned to these symbols and the claim for their presence in open, natural spaces such as mountains. This debate scrutinizes the symbols' role as both cultural objects and passive religious markers. Drawing on various sources, such as natural documents and netnographic materials (press, blogs, and social media) on mountain topics, this presentation will analyze, from a qualitative perspective, two parallel processes at play. The culturalization of Catholic religion in Italy and the heritagization of mountain landscapes offer insight into how religious symbols on mountain peaks interact with broader themes of heritage, identity, and religious freedom in Italy's evolving cultural and ideological landscape.
