This paper will explore the co-ordination of kataphasis and apophasis in theological construals of music from Hans Urs von Balthasar's early essay on music, through Vladimir Jankélévitch's ruminations on the ineffability of music, to Denys Turner's reflections on the im/materiality of music. These threads will be brought into conversation with recent neuroscientific work on music making. This may suggest some ways forward for thinking through the catholicity of music.
