This paper discusses intellectual humility as an antidote to epistemic sovereignty (arrogance), by examining the Quranic story (qissah) of Musa and Khidr and ethical lessons of humility (tawadu') derived from its exegesis as a response to the issue of contemporary fragmentation. The epistemic sovereignty of the modern subject entails epistemic arrogance; a world in which human knowledge and reason are the ultimate authority, and detached from a transcendental anchor. Disconnected from the cosmos and inner self, such an attitude is the epicentre of materialism, loneliness, and environmental degradation. By expanding on Hallaq's prescription to this condition, which states that "alien to modernity, epistemic humility, an antidote to sovereignty, is a much-needed remedy," this paper argues that Musa and Khidr's case of intellectual humility, which situates the individual in the context of cosmos and society, cultivates knowing that challenges social and existential fragmentation.
