Text:
In April and May 1650, while in Târgoviște (the capital city of Wallachia, a tributary state of the Ottoman Empire), the Russian hieromonk Arsenii Sukhanov engaged in a series of heated theological debates with several Orthodox ecclesiastics. Upon his return to Moscow, he submitted to the Office of Ambassadors both an official report and an account of his Quarrels with the Greeks about the Faith. Thanks to S.A. Belokurov and A.P. Bogdanov, Sukhanov's account of the debates is well known. The aim of the present paper is to build on previous research and focus on two understudied aspects: the Wallachian setting (why did the discussions take place in Târgoviște, of all places?) and their format. I shall argue that the Quarrels are indicative of a short but noteworthy renewal of interest in theological debates across Eastern Christianity.
