This paper builds new categorical variables from the global ACLED dataset to identify all events of protest and demonstration by members of the Catholic Church. This is likely the first dataset of its kind to disaggregate and examine the global protest dynamics of this community. The paper compares events where Catholic participants, practices, or signs/rituals were present against other contentious events with religious and secular identities. Conflict outcomes evaluated include contentious or peaceful protest, state intervention, and the presence of armed/paramilitary actors. The piece examines whether Catholics engage in protest differently from other religious groups and how the state interacts with Catholic protestors.
