The aim of my research is to investigate the connection between religion and sovereignty in Jean Bodin works, especially The Six books of commonwealth, and the perception of the french situation in the Italian political environment, especially between the end of the 16th century and firsts decades of the 17th. As Jean Bodin states The Six Books of Commonwealth: «Sovereignty is the absolute and perpetual power of the state». This discussed definition opened a debate that is still going on, thus we can see it under the category of "political theology" or we can assume different points of view that denies the "political theology" interpretation. In my work, I'm trying to bring under the spotlight the reception of Bodin's sovereignty theory in Italy, focusing not only in the comments made by scholars but also on the documents of ambassadors and political actors. At this stage of my studies, I've found some clues of Italian reception of the Bodin's theories ; we have to consider that the first Italian translation appeared in 1588 and the book was banned in 1592. Due to inquisition censorship reading Bodin was not allowed, except for those who received a permission to read his works with the purpose to criticize and dismantle the idea of absolute sovereignty, as Fabio Albergati, for instance, did. Although reading Bodin was not easy and could drive to some criticism, Bodin's ideas overcame the Alps and lot of commentators and scholars seemed to be acknowledged of them and following the french author's path in their works and in other many occasions. For instance, in the war of "Interdetto", we can see that Paolo Sarpi in his legal opinions to the Venetian senate talked without pretense about sovereignty. Scholars and commentators showed to know Bodin but for my work is even interesting to see opinions about Bodin in diplomatic and politician correspondence. Especially from Tuscany and Venice.
